Does former PBOC digital yuan expert Yao Qian’s appearance in Financial Computerization signal interest in a future blockchain role for the digital yuan?
The former head of the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) Digital Currency Research Institute, Yao Qian, appeared in a PBOC-run media outlet this week with a synopsis of his 2021 book, “Blockchain-Based Financial Market Infrastructure: Theory, Practice and Regulation.”
The article is more of a think piece on securities and decentralized business processing, and it make no specific reference to China’s Blockchain-based Service Network (BSN). But interestingly it does highlight briefly (more of an aside actually) Yao Qian’s research on blockchain-based Digital Yuan solutions.
So I’m left wondering if an article on a 2021 book by Yao Qian (he’s now director of the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) Science and Technology Supervision Bureau) published only now on a PBOC-run media outlet is coincidental or signals some current/future interest in blockchain & the digital yuan, particularly with expanded e-CNY trials underway. Regardless, passing it on ICYMI.
Yao Qian’s article appears in the PBOC magazine/online outlet “Financial Computerization,” the strained PBOC translation of 金融电子化.
Note: Blockchain is a National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) designated New Type Infrastructure (NTI) sub-category.
